Rembrandt Lighting

Rembrandt has been influential in all of modern portrait photography and cinematography. In particular his creation of lighting in chirusco. It's interesting that this 1600s Dutch artist has impacted modern artist so much that his lighting technique is reference by name by photographers and cinematographers. You can look up online Rembrandt Lighting and you'll find articles and even videos that illustrate this style of using lighting to shape the composition.

Currently until January 6, 2008, there is a Rembrandt exhibit at the MET Museum in NYC that is fascinating. Check it out!

  1. Rembrandt lighting is very inspring to my photographs. Many of my portraits are inspired by that specific lighting tecnique of the Rennissance period--its quite eloquent.

Annie Leibovitz, a photographer, employs that technique her in work a lot as well as Timothy Greenfield-Sanders.
